In the shadow of the old power plant, right by the sea.
The old Suvilahti power plant district is one of Helsinki's most distinctive corners: graffiti walls, a gasholder and a festival field, with the Kalasatama towers rising behind them. On the waterfront promenade stand two saunas, Meri and Suvi.
From the benches you look out over the sea, and heated steps lead from the terrace straight into the water. You can swim every day of the year. In summer for a morning, midday or evening dip; in winter, into the icy sea in the middle of the city. Between rounds and swims, you just sit around on the terrace.
In winter
The winter swimming spot is right on the sauna terrace: heated steps take you straight into the avanto, and ten steps later back onto the benches. City lights reflect off the ice, and it stays cold exactly as long as you want it to.
In summer
The sea warms up for proper swims and the terrace stays light late into the evening. Gigs on the Suvilahti festival field sometimes carry all the way to the sauna terrace — you could do worse for background music.
